It surprised me how fun it can actually be. Ninjago is one of the best looking and playing games in the series to date, if not the best. Some of the effects can seem muffled, the surround sound isn’t great, and I feel like there could be more voice acting in the gameplay sequences. The sound, however, is a much more mixed bag. There’s still a huge gulf between the gameplay and cut-scenes, and it’s no reference title, but it’s no graphical slouch either. This latest title isn’t perfect but it does seem like a big improvement, with more detailed worlds, longer draw distances, more particle and lighting effects, and more action on screen than I can remember in previous Lego games. Traveller’s Tales have never felt the need to chase polygons or graphics awards with their Lego games, and as a result, they have never felt like the showcase that they could be (given the films look amazing). Each of the hub worlds do feature some 4-player competitive play, but these modes are a) repurposed from Lego Dimensions and b) have to be found in one of the hub worlds to be used. The drop-in, drop-out nature is welcome, but beyond that, there’s not much else to say. As usual for Lego games, Ninjago features 2-player couch co-op, with no options for 4 local players or online play.
